‘White Lotus’ creator Mike White had second thoughts about killing off this major character: ‘Am I making the wrong decision?’

“The White Lotus” creator Mike White apparently had some reservations about killing off one major character in the show’s Season 3 finale.
Warning: Spoilers for Season 3 below.
According to Aimee Lou Wood, who played Chelsea in the hit HBO show’s latest season, White “doubted this choice a lot” when it came to killing off her character.
“Mike doubted this choice a lot,” Wood told Bustle magazine on Tuesday. “He would come up and he would say, ‘Am I making the wrong decision? Are people going to hate me too much, killing the personification of hope and romance and optimism?’”
But Wood, 31, ultimately encouraged White, 54, not to change his mind about killing off Chelsea alongside her on-screen lover Rick (played by Walton Goggins).
“I’m saying, ‘Mike, it has to be Rick and Chelsea. By giving them that ending, you elevate Chelsea. You give her the status of the mystic that she thinks she is,’” the actress explained. “If she went to therapy and did some deep inner work, she would probably have made a different choice. But this is what she wanted.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Wood discussed how she thought Chelsea’s storyline was meant to play out across the eight-episode season.
“Chelsea has got so much s–t that she has not dealt with and healed and processed, and she looks outside for the answers all the time: the Zodiac, the spirituality books, the jargon, the aphorisms, the mantras,” Wood reflected. “She hasn’t looked inside because she’s scared of what she’ll find in there.”
“And so she says, ‘The thing that’s drawing me to Rick is fate.’ No, the thing that’s drawing her to Rick is some unhealed s–t.”
The third season of “The White Lotus,” which aired its finale on Sunday, April 6, departed from previous seasons by killing off several characters instead of just one.
Wood and Goggins’ characters, Chelsea and Rick, die in a shocking shootout at the titular Thailand resort after Rick murders resort owner Jim Hollinger (Scott Glenn) – who turns out to be his father.
When Rick shoots two security guards, Chelsea catches a stray bullet in the chest and dies. Rick is then shot and killed by security guard Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong) while walking away, holding Chelsea’s lifeless body.
Wood previously discussed her character’s surprising death in a post-finale panel with the cast on Monday. Although she knew Chelsea’s demise was coming, the “Sex Education” actress felt “super weird” about filming the dreadful scene.
“It was weird because for two weeks before we shot it, I felt super weird,” she said. “It felt like this odd, ominous thing. It was the hottest day ever and Walton had to carry me so many times. It looked exactly how it felt, which is really strange. There’s a lot in that episode that made me f–king sob. I feel ache-y.”
Goggins then spoke out about Rick and Chelsea’s deaths in a lengthy Instagram post on Monday – although he made no mention of the rumored feud between them.
As for the show’s creator, he faced criticism from fans who argued that the third season of “The White Lotus” had “no plot.”
“There was complaining about how there’s no plot,” White responded after the season finale. “That part I find weird because… it never did. Part of me is just like, bro, this is the vibe. I’m world-building.”
“If you don’t want to go to bed with me, then get out of my bed,” he added. “I’m edging you! Enjoy the edging. If you don’t want to be edged, then get out of my bed.”
