As If: Alicia Silverstone to reprise iconic ‘Clueless’ role in sequel series — and fans are divided

As if!

Alicia Silverstone is set to reprise her iconic Cher Horowitz role in a “Clueless” sequel series at Peacock, written and executive produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (“Gossip Girl,” “The O.C.”). Silverstone will also executive produce.

“Totally buggin’… in the best way 💁‍♀️✨,” Silverstone wrote via Instagram on Thursday, reacting to the news.

Fans of the original 1995 movie, however, have mixed reactions.

One fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “I kinda need them to not touch this classic.”

Another fan stated, “I’m honestly excited. We’ve only had one movie and I’ve never seen Alicia in anything else. Get your bag queen.”

“As long as Alicia is there, it might be good but Peacock doesn’t have a good track record when creating new shows,” a third critic claimed.

Another viewer complained, “I loved this movie as a child, but can we create original movies?”

The original comedy was loosely based on Jane Austen’s novel, Emma.

Plot details of the sequel series are under wraps, so it’s not clear if it will include other Austen novels. The movie starred Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy (who died in 2009 at age 32), Stacey Dash, Breckin Meyer, Donald Faison (“Scrubs”) and Jeremy Sisto.

In 1996 there was a “Clueless” TV series on ABC, but Rachel Blanchard played Cher Horowitz instead.

In 2019, Schwartz touched on how he’s known for stories about teens and “loves” telling stories about that age group.

“Obviously as I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to have a different perspective on teenagers, and maybe even more empathy for the fragility of that time. I also have more empathy for parents, now,” he told the Post at the time.

The plot of the original “Clueless” movie followed Cher (Silverstone), a shallow and wealthy Beverly Hills high school teen, as she made misguided attempts to matchmake her teachers and friends. Silverstone, now 48, was just 18 when she took on the role.

The movie was a hit, making $88 million on a budget of $12 million, and has since grown a cult following.

“I was so overwhelmed by being famous because I was such a young girl and it was never really my intention,” Silverstone told the Guardian in 2020.

That same year, she reflected on “Clueless” for its 25th anniversary. “I found Cher on the page to be materialistic and unappealing. And really annoying, to be honest. Just everything I sort of loathed,” she told Vogue.

“But I realized that was just me judging her, and once I started working on her I found all the heart and all the love,” she continued. “She loves her daddy so much! And she’s trying to be a supportive friend, so I just sorta put all of my love and heart into this character with these other aspects that were cringeworthy.”

Cher ending up romantically involved with her stepbrother, Josh (Rudd), at the end of the movie.

“I don’t remember having any point of view on it,” Silverstone expressed. “I mean I know we’re not blood, so it’s not like illegal in that way. But it is really weird when you think about it. I mean it’s a funny thing to grow up that way, but then again they weren’t related. It’s very unusual, but it’s cool!”

“I don’t think we had any intellectual idea about us being up-and-comers in a big movie because we didn’t know we were in a big movie. Maybe other people knew, but I was so innocent and never really paying attention to career stuff at all. I was just doing another job.”

A premiere date and further casting for the sequel series have not been announced.
