Boyfriend accused of stealing girlfriend’s moment for standing before marathon finish line for kiss

Picture this: you’re about to complete what is potentially the biggest milestone of your life so far, something you’ve worked so hard towards for months or even years. Then, suddenly, somebody close to you, perhaps your boyfriend or husband, interrupts you right before you’re able to do it.
Sure, the thought was there. They wanted to celebrate with you in the moment! But, not only have they thrown you off completely and made it about them, or the two of you, rather than just you, they’ve embarrassed you in front of millions of people on the internet.
If you haven’t experienced this yourself (which I hope you haven’t), chances are you’re thinking of a particular video you’ve seen online. I can’t tell you which one, because for some reason there are multiple. Ladies, it’s time to stand up.

It’s happened again
This week, a woman named Daphne de Kreek went viral on TikTok with a video of her running the Rotterdam Marathon.
In the clip, Daphne is closing in on the finish line, when a number of her friends and family members join her on the track. Most of them leave her be – they don’t touch or hug her, just simply run aside her, cheering her on. Well, except her partner, who grabs her face and comes in for a kiss, causing her to slow for a moment before she’s able to continue.
The video is captioned positively, capturing what was clearly an exciting moment for Daphne.
“What an experience and what support!” the caption says, translated from Dutch.

“There were quite a few things against me and it took me almost an hour longer than what my goal was. But I made it and I enjoyed it!”
However, with over four million views and the comments turned off, it’s clear that not everyone agreed with her positive stance.
Why do you have to steal her moment?
Although Daphne was able to keep going and finish the race despite being stopped momentarily, for many people this would have been the final straw. So close to the finish line, any runner would be losing momentum, holding out for the moment that they can collapse into the arms of their loved ones – and that coming early could have put anyone’s position in jeopardy.
And the frustrating thing is, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this.
I dare say at this point many of us would be picturing the infamous video of a mother, seconds away from crossing the finish line of a half marathon in Brazil, only for her husband to push their children out into her path to congratulate their mum – even though she hadn’t finished yet.
She was about to have her moment, ultimately finishing the race in first place, but her husband almost ruined it, shrugging in confusion when she didn’t stop to hug her kids.
And, just last month, another clip went viral from a couple in Wales, of a woman crossing the finish line of a marathon, only to see her now-fiance down on one knee, proposing.
Sure, at least this one let her finish, but did he really have to steal her moment?
